Beautiful piece of art from late 18th or early 19th century.
This is a Neapolitan Creche Figure; these figures were traditionally created in Italy and presented at churches
This figure is about 14 1/2" tall ; doesn't have a a wooden base. Created with the finest details including realistic glass eyes and natural materials. His head and legs are made of a polychrome terracotta (often made from painted over ceramic). Hands made of wood; mussing finger (see photo). The rest of the body seems to be pressed hay. Right arm is flaccid (might be broken inside under the clothes).
The head set with glass eyes. Flaky paint, peeling areas, scratches and cracks are present. Figure is dressed in the original silk and cotton clothing ; all clothes are in poor condition.
